📝 Let's talk golf resumes
We've touched on golf resumes before but I think it deserves more of a deep dive.
I remember when my son's coach first suggested a golf resume to us I thought it was overkill — he was probably around 12 at the time. However, I quickly realized I was wrong and it became an absolute necessity from then on!
Golf resumes may
feel a bit overwhelming if you've never put one together before, but I promise you it gets easier if you create a template first when they're younger, then update it as they grow.
Who needs a golf resume?
Maybe you think your junior golfer is a bit too young or not as experienced. I would argue you should still create one sooner versus later and
update it regularly. If nothing else, they can look back and see the progress they've made in a short time.
You'll need the resume when you:
- Apply to certain invitationals (example: The Future Masters)
- Ask for sponsorship
opportunities
- Send a letter to a tournament director asking for a spot in the field
- Need to reference information for a bio
- When sending a letter of introduction to a college coach
What should the golf resume include?
You will find lots of advice on creating the perfect golf resume, but the basics should include:
Player info
- Full name
- Graduation year
- School and city/state
- GPA (weighted and
unweighted if strong)
- Test scores (if applicable)
- Email (player’s first, then parent)
- Phone number
- Home course/coach contact info (VERY important because college coaches can contact your coach directly to ask more questions)
- A polished picture
Scoring
- Current scoring average (18-hole, tournament only)
- Differential or handicap index (if relevant)
- State ranking
- National ranking
(AJGA, Junior Golf Scoreboard, etc.)
Tournament results for last 12 months
- Event name
- Tour name (AJGA, USGA, state association, etc.)
- Yardage played
- Course name
- Finishing position
- Scores by round
- Include upcoming events and qualifiers, if there's room
Development info (adds helpful context)
- Club head speed / ball speed (optional but helpful)
- Typical driving distance
- Strengths (short game, iron play, consistency)
- Any stats showing improvement in last 12 months
Notable achievements (optional)
- Major wins
- Top-5 / Top-10 finishes
- State championships
- USGA / AJGA qualifications
- Match play appearances
- All-state honors
Academics and community
service
- Academic honors (including any clubs like National Honor Society)
- AP/IB courses
- Team captain roles
- Community service
You can also add
- Swing video link (Can linke to YouTube/Vimeo)
- Tournament highlights (if available)
- Social media (only if it's appropriate!)
I know this is a
ton of information but many of these bullets can be combined in one line across the page. You can also make grids or tables, especially with the tournament section, so you can neatly organize the info.
One more thing:
- Keep it to one page, if
possible
- Make it highly skimmable!
- Use multiple columns
